Limitations of MMORPG

 

While the benefits of MMORPG are significant, the limitations of gaming should be explored.  Limitations can be categorized into three general areas:  Behavioral issues, gender problems, and other issues.

 

Behavioral Issues:

  • addiction (King & Delfabbro, 2014)

  • aggression (Gotterbarn, 2010)

  • violence (Gotterbarn, 2010)

  • self-centeredness (Gotterbarn, 2010)

  • low physical activity (Gotterbarn, 2010)

  • lowered academic performance (Gotterbarn, 2010)

 

Gender Problems:

  • boys -  more comfortable using technology than girls (Gotterbarn, 2010)

  • girls - less positive attitude toward using technology (Gotterbarn, 2010)

  • girls are at a disadvantage using gaming in an educational setting (Gotterbarn, 2010)

 

Other Issues:

  • funding (McCrea, 2013)

  • time - to experiment and to get running in a classroom (McCrea, 2013)

  • accessibility (Hess & Gunter, 2013)

  • distraction to learning (Psotka, 2013)

  • cognitive overload (Psotka, 2013)

  • not enough games for specific age groups (Electronic Education Report, 2013)

  • difficult, time consuming, and costly to create (Kapp, 2012)

  • runs counter to school organization (Shaffer, et al., 2004)

  • lack of understanding of educational benefits (Hess & Gunter, 2013)
