• Massive: from one to many thousands can play at the same time

• Communication inside the game

• Interaction often leads to more complex collaboration & participation in guilds/player groups

• Takes place in graphically rich, 3-D virtual world

• Players are represented by avatars: customizable characters that interact with the virtual environment, other avatars, & non-player characters in the game

• Different character types may have pre-assigned skills and/or tools/weapons.

• Through strategic play and acquisition, players  enhance  abilities and possessions of the avatar
